SAFETY

Roads that think will bring you home safely

Less fatalities and less injuries, less resulting congestions- our safety solutions reduce the number of accidents and thus their impact on traffic flow.

Increasing traffic safety is a major objective of our systems. One way this can be achieved is by reducing the risk of accidents using traffic control and hazard warning. Besides the direct negative effects of accidents they very often cause congestions and thereby reduce the quality of your traffic system.

The following measures are mainly carried out:

  • Congestion warning based on automatic congestion detection: Congestion is indicated using variable message and traffic signs. Traffic is slowly guided to the end of the congestion via step by step speed reduction.
  • Overtaking restrictions for trucks: In case of high traffic volume and heavy speed differences on different lanes the number of critical situations is reduced by automatic activation of a ban on overtaking for trucks.
  • Incident warning: Warnings may be given manually in case of incidents recorded by the operator (for example accident, vehicle breakdown), or automatically based on online detection. Automatic activations are possible for wrong way drivers or bad road conditions, for example slippery road. Indication of hazard areas is done using variable message and traffic signs, showing warning symbols, step by step speed reduction and lane closures.

Another important contribution to traffic safety can be made through traffic control in tunnels. Via connection to the tunnel control center appropriate actions can automatically be activated on demand, again using variable message and traffic signs. Applications are, amongst others, tunnel maintenance or emergency and disaster handling. Again step by step speed reduction with incident warning, lane closures or even tunnel closures may be indicated. If necessary, rerouting advices may be given using variable message signs or specific rerouting signs.

An additional, indirect increase in traffic safety is achieved by all other traffic control measures such as the direct transmission of the displays into the vehicle through a C2X technology and also via well informed road users, because improved traffic quality automatically leads to a reduction of critical situations.
