V2I: Connecting vehicles with infrastructure

Heusch/Boesefeldt┬┤s high-performance systems provide the functionality for central data acquisition, data analysis and data provision for cooperative traffic management.


Detailed GIS-Basis

Heusch Boesefeldt┬┤s systems handle highly granular geographic information online and in real time, thereby supporting detailed attributions of network and infrastructure. Heusch/Boesefeldt has developed proprietary tools to visualize detailed GIS information down to lane and road markings.

Analysis of Floating Car Data and Messages

Beginning with the first developments for FCD in the 1990s Heusch/ Boesefeldt accompanied this development consistently. Our products include analytical methods for FCD messages. For this purpose, we have developed processes for the plausibility check of messages, in particular to evaluate the statistical significance of the sample.


On-the-Fly Map Matching

V2I applications require a map matching, which is as flexible as possible and is not bound to fixed road segments. On one hand it must be guaranteeed that information from vehicles is received by and stored in the central management system with highest possible level of detail. On the other hand data and messages gerenated by the analysis process in the centre have to be provided with maximum location accuracy for in-vehicle applications.

We offer various referencing methods on the basis of an on-the-fly map matching (eg. AGORA-C, OPEN LR). Heusch / Boesefeldt solutions guarantee high performance map matching for road infrastructure operators as well as data subscribers on vehicle-side (service provider or OEM) in terms of accuracy and matching speed.   


Data Fusion

In a cooperative center data from various sources such as detector data, messages and vehicle-generated data and events are gathered. Using this bundle of information a maximum of quality has to be generated in order to offer high quality services. Intelligent model- and knowledge-based data fusion methods are essential in this context. 


Message Management

As one of the pioneers in DATEX-development, Heusch/Boesefeldt has met the challenges of an advanced message management very early. DATEX and TPEG are the main standards for message transfer from public to the service provider / OEM in V2I environment. Our systems are able to directly record and analyze the V2I standards DENM, CAM and SPAT.


Cooperative Toolbox

A spatial continuity of V2I services requires that a variety of stakeholders on public side are empowered to deliver messages and information to service providers. However, today it can not be expected that authorities responsible for road are able to provide the required information to traffic management and control centers in a structured way.

Within the research project UR:BAN Heusch/Boesefeldt therefore developes easy to install components based on internet technology to enable  cooperative services and functions in both directions (V2I  & I2V). The development is based on a kit of cooperative applications, which can be referred to as "Cooperative Toolbox".

This universal toolbox includes the following applications :


  • Road Works Information System: Web-based input from road works messages with calculation and detection (using FCD) of the impact on traffic flow. This allows the filtering of construction sites with respect to their traffic-related relevance
  • Highly accurate traffic situation at intersection using V2I evaluations: The continuous evaluation of CAM messages generates a highly detailed picture of traffic flow at intersections in dependency of the signal program. Extensive statistical analysis and visualizations provide a quick overview on the quality of traffic flow at the intersection to the operator.
  • Network-wide analysis of accidents: Accidents are recorded digitally via a web-based user interface. The module automatically generates messages at locations with high accident rate for transmission to service providers and / or OEMs.


The cooperative toolbox can easily be extended by additional applications, depending on the customer needs.
